Week 1: Artist Statement

For week 1 and week 2, the main priority as sorting out the team of four or more students. We were asked to think about what are the outcomes we want from this paper and why we chose to do exhibition.

For myself (Nicole), Cay and Angelique, we were all interested on the possibility of exhibiting our work aside from our course which is Visual Communication Design. Through our pitch we were able to meet Michael and David who were both VCD students as well, as they had the same intent to display works beyond our VCD course.

Below is our joint artist statement as posted on Facebook group

Hi! I am Cay, a VCD student. For my Honors project, I am working on creating accessible resource toolkit for refugee youth in New Zealand. My aim is to create something that will enable youth to act as activators of change. During my research last semester I was initially interested in creating an installation aiming to bring awareness to the issues faced by the refugee youth. This idea is not that developed, therefore, I am not too interested in exhibiting work but I am open to collaborating with people if the opportunity is presented. I am interested in creating material and image branding or curating for the exhibition.
Nikki and Angelique are also VCD students. Nikki’s current interest includes painting, illustration and typography. She does painting and illustration as a personal hobby and creative outlet. But also like typography and editorial design. Her goal for the exhibition paper is to take on the role of an Artist, to highlight her interest in painting and artwork. She’s also keen on applying design practice for this exhibition. Angelique’s work is often based on typography and editorial design. And love to explore and experiment design in its abstract way. She’s also into painting and illustration. She wants to use this exhibition paper to emphasise her major project topic women empowerment. It is all about helping transform and enhance women confidence in fitness so to improve their health and well-being. She wants to use this paper to exhibit and publish designs to inspire others by her craft.
We are not currently attached to a certain topic to exhibit. But we are also interested in topics around mental illness, women empowerment and race. I would be interested in doing something about refugees as it is my current topic for my Honors project. I think it would be cool to work on an interactive exhibition.

Invitations

The private invitations for this event were straight forward but so important to us. As we wanted all our private invitees to attend we got our invites printed on high quality silver card.

Location

Before we locked down the Roxburgh St Art location we looked at other possible options. After seeing a post from another student in the exhibition paper Facebook group I emailed bill.giannakakis@gmail.com to find out more about the space above Glassons. I was not able to get a response therefore we sticked to the Roxburgh. From the images shared on Facebook, I liked how the space was wider even though it is only one room.  Photo from Facebook group  5 Roxburgh St Mount Victoria  The Roxburgh St Art was our initial location that we found more suited to our original concept of Behind the Façade, we decided to stick with this as it meets our price range how close it is and we like that it is not completely similar to a white cube gallery space. Before we locked down the space we had a phone call meeting with Denise to discuss what we wanted to do with it as well as set up time for a site visit. We kept in touch mostly through emails.
